The title of the blog is a reference to the tangled threads in my sewing box, but could just as easily describe the myriad of jumbled thoughts and ideas that exist in my head. I am hoping that this journey will help me unravel some of these ideas and translate them into exciting explorations in fabric and thread.anneh316http://www.blogger.com/profile/17811919152289979471noreply@blogger.comBlogger19125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6477411679717072950.post-75237973757285530022016-05-13T14:23:00.000-07:002016-06-07T08:52:12.304-07:00<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: x-large;"><b>Chapter Four - Cut and Fold Designs </b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: x-large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><b>Symmetrical Designs</b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I really enjoyed this chapter and was both surprised and delighted by the myriad of designs that can be created using this method. I liked the element of surprise, particularly with the more complex designs that were created with multiple folds and cuts. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I decided to use coloured backgrounds rather than white but still keeping to my basic colour scheme of r</span><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">ed and green; in this case I mixed light pink for the symmetrical designs and and light green for the asymmetrical designs. I decided to use my white, folded practice papers to show how I had created the designs so I needed coloured background for the practice papers to show up. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">The practice papers served a dual purpose:- </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">a) I wouldn't need to draw out the designs to show how I had created them - especially the asymmetrical designs as they were more complex and </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">b) I would also have a paper template if I needed to recreate the design accurately. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Please note however, there are no paper patterns for the later asymmetrical designs as they were created by random folds and cuts - no practice papers and almost impossible to draw. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Unfortunately, it was only after everything had been stuck down and the images scanned that I realised some of the green backgrounds weren't strong enough and on these sheets the practice papers don't show up very well. In hindsight I should have stuck to black and white and just drawn the designs..................but then hindsight is a wonderful thing! </span></div>

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">7. First attempt to create No 5 but I cut in the wrong place and ended up with two unconnected curvy lines. Happy accident - I really like this one!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">9. Continuing with curved petal shapes I developed the idea of making double petals - more interesting design and has some movement.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">10. Idea for this design is loosely based on one of my line drawings on sheet 2 - shield shape, bottom right. I have added complexity to a circular design by adding further curved lines and an oval hole in the centre. This space leaves scope for further design elements - stitching or adding other shapes.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">11. Basic diagonal cross shape with rectangular hole in the centre. Design idea based on several of my line drawings that contain a cross/windmill shape.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">13. Design loosely based on drawing of a broken window on sheet 1. The square in the centre represents the window with the jagged panes of glass around it on all sides.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: x-large;"><b>Chapter Four - Cut and Fold Paper </b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: x-large;"><b>Coloured Designs</b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I really enjoyed this exercise and felt I could have gone on forever. I find it really therapeutic cutting out and arranging paper shapes as it is fascinating to explore the variety of designs and combinations that can be created with just a handful of paper cut outs. However, in the interests of moving on to fabric and thread, I decided to stop after four sheets as I feel I am spending too much time on each chapter.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Unfortunately, I forgot to number each design before scanning the sheets in. As these sheets are A3 I needed to scan them at work, but it was only after I brought my sketchbook </span><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">home I released I had omitted the numbers. As an alternative, I have listed the position of the designs on each sheet so they can be easily identified. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I have also described and referenced the individual layers of each design as follows:</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Background</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Middle - numbered according to the original sheet it appeared on. (S) = Symmetrical (A) = Asymmetrical</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Top numbered as above</span></li>
</ul>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I prefer to work this way - detailing what I have done on my blog rather than handwriting the information on my sketchbook pages.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">My favourite two designs from this sheet are bottom centre and top right - both designs have lots of movement that remind me of windmill sails. <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Although I can see that asymmetrical designs create more tension and movement, overall I prefer the symmetrical designs. This may be because I like the sense of order and balance that is created by the symmetrical shapes or a symmetrical arrangement. However, I would concede that the designs are more static and tend to be a bit predictable. </span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I decided to change the shape I was working with and chose a more linear cross shape to ring the changes from my previous star/cross, which contained lots of sharp points and always seemed to create very spiky designs. The new cross shape is an amalgam of several crosses from my research pages and the benefit of this new shape is it can be used in a square format or turned round to create diagonal patterns.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I feel I made heavy weather of this chapter and probably spent too much time on it. However, once I got my head round the 'shape within a shape' section, I really began to enjoy myself and felt I was making progress as ideas began to flow. I could have developed some designs further but with this method of designing you can go on forever and sometimes it's difficult to know when to stop. I am now looking forward to chapter four and the new challenge I am sure it will bring!</span></div>

I like the fact that although the shape is essentially a cross, it resembles a star because of the diagonal points, so I feel I have the best of both worlds.</span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">1. I returned to the rectangular star shape and placed four together (Interchange) to see what shape would be formed in the centre. I like the fact that the new shape has lost something of the 'cross/star look' and is a definite diamond shape - may well be worth a second look.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">2. I then arranged four more shapes with the smaller points facing inwards and an X shaped cross emerged. I love this method of designing as there are so many surprises in the negative space. </span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">1. (Counterchange) I had lots of cut outs left over from the original shape so I went back to playing with it and decided to change the orientation of the shape by moving it a quarter turn. It now looks completely different to the original and has a more square, compact look, which I think I prefer.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">2. Four shapes together in contrasting colours (Interchange). This is a much less open design than the original, therefore the centre shape is smaller - a very defined cross shape but as each part is completely separate it couldn't be cut out as one shape unless adapted in some way.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">3. Four shapes arranged as above but moved apart slightly and edges drawn in to complete the cross shape. Again, I really like this shape but maybe it is a little too complex with the double points and could end up looking too 'spiky' or busy. However, I think the double points give the shape some movement and that this could possibly be exploited through clever use of colour. I will probably come back to this at some stage and experiment with different colour/tonal combinations and see if there is any mileage in this idea.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">For each of the 'shapes within a shape' I have shown how the shape looks when placed within a frame and I really like the effect this creates as it adds another dimension that can be explored. It also shows how the original shape sits within its new background shape and whether any distortion occurs.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">2. Original shape in a circle - the only distortion is that the points become curved on the outside edge.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">3. Original shape moved a quarter turn as shown in Design Sheet A4 - shape doesn't distort.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">4. Original shape in an equilateral triangle. The shape has distorted a lot from the original but I think it looks like a plane or a rocket and I'm not sure I like it. It does work better when enclosed within a frame but I don't think I will take this any further.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">5. 'Plane' shapes arranged with long points meeting in the centre. This create a hexagon (six equilateral triangles) but again I don't like it - looks too spiky!</span></div>

I made two large stamps - the shape and its mirror image using 'funky foam'. Although this shape is asymmetrical, it does not rotate or reflect well as both sides are quite similar. I was disappointed that the shapes did not yield more varied patterns but I did find the overall effect</span><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"> of the prints interesting, probably because I like the colour combinations and the way I could easily mix and blend the paint colours.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I then decided to change tack and look for a shape that would </span><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">generate a greater variety of patterns. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">This shape came from one of my cross drawings - see first page of line drawings (design from The Internet) and </span><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">again I created two stamps (much smaller this time) </span><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">of the shape and its mirror image. Although the </span><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">shape is very simple, I knew it would produce a nice range of secondary patterns when rotated and reflected. I particularly like the sharpness of these designs which was achieved by using a selection of </span><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">ink pads used in rubber stamping.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">The reds I used were Scarlet and Brilliant Red. Again, I found them to be similar so I diluted Scarlet by 100% and also mixed 1 part scarlet and 1 part Brilliant Red. I'm not sure why this combination has come out much darker than the two individual colours - I think I might have added a little more Brilliant Red powder to strengthen the mix.</span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I then began painting a selection of papers including newsprint, tissue, cartridge, brown paper etc and I thoroughly enjoyed myself! I'm afraid I found it too frustrating to try and record what I was doing as I was having too much fun, but I made sure I painted lots of papers in good quantities so I feel I have plenty to work with. I worked spontaneously with the colours and the papers and I know I would not have painted so many if I had had to keep stopping</span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"> to write up recipes and methods.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I have cut strips and sandwiched them together to show the range of papers I have created. Some of the techniques I have used include painting with a sponge brush, sponging, spraying with water, sandwiching wet papers together to transfer colours, and painting a second colour on top of the first colour after it has dried.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">As part of her feedback Sian asked me to find or contrive some more asymmetrical cross shapes. I photographed details from a Tiffany lampshade and laid out some kitchen utensils on the floor but these did not inspire me.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Then I spotted my husband's guitar propped against the wall!</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Here were lots of previously 'unnoticed crosses', so I grabbed my camera and photographed sections of the guitar from unusual angles and created a collage of the results.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I really liked these images so I traced and simplified the individual sections to see what 'crosses' I had discovered. </span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I have decided to run with the shapes in the bottom, right hand image and after I paint some papers, my next task will be to create a stamp from this design.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">1. Words/expressions relating to crosses</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDxd-Zr8Xkz4G7u7JybN6a9DC3DeR_lN3XS7ItusP3YgRf8dwk2tVF30CCd60tiiROlihM8cvGSGuZ95SwQ4gjxiWXeh0JiRkIzTKBGgBfWa4v0LxyVQ0lLZJZyAQFu-IijFSACk5XE7NK/s1600/005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDxd-Zr8Xkz4G7u7JybN6a9DC3DeR_lN3XS7ItusP3YgRf8dwk2tVF30CCd60tiiROlihM8cvGSGuZ95SwQ4gjxiWXeh0JiRkIzTKBGgBfWa4v0LxyVQ0lLZJZyAQFu-IijFSACk5XE7NK/s320/005.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">2. Why crosses and where?</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOi7HCBXGlFaeV9LS_iyDu_Cq7WQkaO-uAsnE0cocgZ9_Iyvz2ZHkhYdqNvSUsMioqZOTvbt7TQJGqDyOIKkxIYHJJqp8oSDdc7XTeaV3yyrvEmdv7adtxB1UJH1kBjc7CnPKsZDea48yl/s1600/008.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOi7HCBXGlFaeV9LS_iyDu_Cq7WQkaO-uAsnE0cocgZ9_Iyvz2ZHkhYdqNvSUsMioqZOTvbt7TQJGqDyOIKkxIYHJJqp8oSDdc7XTeaV3yyrvEmdv7adtxB1UJH1kBjc7CnPKsZDea48yl/s320/008.JPG" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I actually created these pages at the outset of the module but didn't think to photograph them to put on the blog. As I am now closely analysing my crosses to select the shapes that are most suitable for stamping and printing, I thought it would be appropriate to include them here. These were my initial thoughts about crosses - words, expressions, why crosses rather than stars and finally sources of cross shapes.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">We have been doing a lot of decorating recently and as a result have accumulated a large quantity of paint colour charts. Rather than throw them away I decided to cut out strips from the red and green sections and weave them together. I really like the effect and feel there is scope for further experimentation e.g. greater variety in the width of the strips, incorporating plain and patterned strips, allowing one colour to dominate more, increase the range of shades and tints of each colour, one colour only in each direction.... and so on....................lots of possibilities I think!</span>anneh316http://www.blogger.com/profile/17811919152289979471noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6477411679717072950.post-38323161100829192492012-10-26T16:35:00.000-07:002012-10-27T05:03:14.886-07:00A Visual Feast<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I have chosen to work with red and green as this is my favourite pair of complementary colours. These are the classic Christmas colours - fir trees, ivy, poinsettias and holly bushes heavy with glossy red berries or the blood red roses, carnations and variegated geraniums of summertime. Tomatoes, peppers, salad leaves, rosy apples, raspberries, strawberries and fiery chillies bring red and green to the table. Here is a collage to illustrate red and green. It contains hand painted papers, magazine images, scrapbooking papers, paint swatches and photographs.</span>anneh316http://www.blogger.com/profile/17811919152289979471noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6477411679717072950.post-13889023613254591632012-10-26T15:54:00.003-07:002012-10-27T05:01:47.624-07:00Complementary Colours<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Vibration is the visual phenomenon caused by using complementary colours in equal quantities and usually occurs at the point where the colours meet. It is an unsettling effect where the eye becomes confused and does not know which colour to focus on and because of this the colours can appear to move (vibrate). It is better therefore to allow one colour to dominate the scheme and use less of its complement.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I painted swatches of yellow/purple, green/red and orange/blue. The swatches on the top row show the colours edge to edge in equal quantities to demonstrate vibration. In the centre row the lighter colours have been painted in the larger squares, whereas in the bottom row the lighter colours have been painted in the smaller squares. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I prefer the swatches in the bottom row where the darker colours dominate, possibly because they possess greater visual weight and seem more balanced and pleasing to the eye - well to my eye anyway!</span>anneh316http://www.blogger.com/profile/17811919152289979471noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6477411679717072950.post-16902123651628726752012-10-26T15:31:00.000-07:002012-10-28T15:35:29.661-07:00Complementary Colours<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: medium;">These are the line drawings I have taken from my ‘crosses’ research. I have no idea which shapes are going to be the best ones to take forward to the next chapter of the module although I feel I would like to combine a curvy shape and an angular shape as this would provide the best of both worlds. However, Will that work……………………………don’t know?</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: medium;">1. I really like the broken window drawing but I’m not sure how I could develop this into a shape/design for printing. I feel the angular cross/star design in the centre has a lot more mileage but would probably need to be simplified. The stained glass window could maybe work ………………….not sure. The curved cross pendant could be interesting as it only symmetrical in one direction - I can see the possibility of lots of patterns radiating out from the centre using this shape.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: large;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: large;">Here is the colour wheel I painted with Reeves Gouache. I like precision tasks so I enjoyed this very much. I think I am going to choose green and red for my pair of complementary colours as it is a favourite combination of mine, often seen in nature – think of holly, red roses or a poppy field and it is wonderful how bright red ‘sings’ against a green backdrop. I really love the drama of complementary colours so I am looking forward to painting some papers at the weekend when I have a bit more time. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">1. I love some of the images on this collage, particularly the window frame around the broken window and the distorted reflections which produce asymmetrical, curvy crosses. I also find the twisted vine branches really interesting – it’s as if they have been tied in a knot. The rubbings were taken from a basket weave chair and a drain cover.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">2. This collage contains photographs of an encaustic tiled floor from a little church just outside Grasmere in the Lake District and a beautiful, contemporary stained glass window from a church in Nazareth. The intricate metal design at top left is my neighbour’s front door mat – I think this would make a lovely quilting pattern. The other images were found on the Internet.</span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">3. Another collage including more Internet images, another stained glass window from Nazareth, twisted roots against a wall, a metal structure – part of a bridge I think, a needlepoint cushion, a fractal and another rubbing from a drain cover. Most of these images are symmetrical apart from the roots, bridge and the stained glass window. I must admit, I found it much more difficult to find asymmetrical items.</span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">4. This set of images contains a photograph I took at a quilt show years ago, another fractal which I think looks like an exotic sea creature, some traditional tile patterns and a tattoo design. I have also included some very interesting folded paper crosses which I found on the Internet. I love their three-dimensional quality and would like to explore this further at some point in the course.</span><br />

It’s been fun trying out all the different templates, colours and settings but I finally decided on something quite simple so that the blog design doesn’t compete with the work I want to post. I’ve looked at lots of Distant Stitch blogs recently and I have been so impressed with the stunning work that is being produced – I only hope I can maintain the high standard. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">At the moment I am sorting out my research images for ‘crosses’ and painting a colour wheel. However, I am really looking forward to getting deeper into the first module and feel very excited at the prospect of painting, cutting, sticking and stamping not to mention stitching, bonding and slashing – sheer heaven! </span><br />
